
Set in a large deer park, this fortified mansion was built by the Courtenays between 1390-1490. Severely damaged in the Civil War, the house was restored by a rebuilding programme which ran through to the 19th century. It now houses Georgian interior, house paintings (by Cosway, Reynolds and Kneller), furniture and objects d'art of the Earls of Devon. Features: Gardens and deer park overlooking the River Exe; Victorian gardens with old fashioned roses; an 18th century woodland backdrop to the castle.
